We have been overwhelmed by the response to the early purchase of Chromebooks this year. You can go to https://www.google.com/chromebook/ to see more info on Chromebooks in general, but here is the info for our school.
The program we are using is a leasing program for the Chromebooks, the parents will pay $275 ($225 for the device, case and licenses needed and $50 for insurance). The $225 is a one time fee and the $50 will be collected each year thereafter. The insurance is to cover anything that happens to the Chromebook. This will be handed by incidents. First incident, insurance covers it fully, second incident, there is a $50 deductible (not to exceed the cost of the repair) and if there is a third incident, you will be required to replace the device at full price. The lease is setup so that the device is assigned to your child for the duration of the school year. They will be responsible for keeping up with it until the end of the year. At the end of the year, they will turn in the devices and we will keep them over the summer to check and clean them so that they are ready for the next year. We will also troubleshoot and fix any problems that arise during the school year. If the device is not owned by OCS, we would not be able to do this.
The device we have decided to go with is a Lenovo N22. It has an 11.6" screen and is a rugged design that will stand up to the everyday wear and tear that the kids place on it. It has 4Gb of memory and 8Gb of storage. All of the files are stored in Google drive so this 8Gb of storage space is seldom used. The case is a MAX Case. We choose these for the value vs. protection. They had good ratings and we believe they will do a good job of protecting the devices. The lifespan of the devices is 4-5 years. Our plan is to use them for 4 years and hopefully we can get a 5th year out of them.
Next year, we will issue a Chromebook to each student in grades 7-12 at the beginning of the school year. The cost will be built into the fees for that year. These will be the only devices used in class, but if a student would like to use a different one at home, they are welcome to use them. We feel these devices are best suited for the classroom and will work better if every student is on the same device as they will all work together. Since we are requiring people to purchase these devices, we are going to turn them over to the students once they graduate, but this will be only for the graduation class of 2017 and 2018 because they will only be able to use them for a max of two years. All students beginning with the class of 2019 will be required to turn their Chromebook back in at the end of the year.
The apps that will be installed on the device will vary by class because they are based on needs for each class. We will have GoGuardian installed on each device so that they can be monitored for usage and filtered. This is also used in the classroom to help keep the students engaged as it does not allow them to venture outside of the parameters the teacher sets for that class period.
If you have already emailed me about a Chromebook, I have your name on the list. If you have not contacted me to purchase one, please respond to this email. If you need to cancel your order, please respond to this email cancelling the Chromebook purchase. Chrome books must be paid for by October 3rd.
Thank you so much for your support in becoming a Google school. Jayme Stokes
