Explain to your child that this will be a test where they spell a word that you say and sound out for them. Tell them to put their finger on the number one. Say "The word that you will spell is elf. There are 3 letters in this word. The first letter makes the sound /e/. Write that letter. The second letter makes the sound /l/. Write that letter. The last letter makes the sound /f/. Write that letter. You have spelled elf /e//l//f/." Continue the same directions for the remainder of the words. On number ten, make sure you remind them that the word is a person's name and that it begins with a capital letter. All other letters should be lower case letters.
